Everything You Need to Know About the Design Theory

Design Theory – the concept isn’t as complex as it sounds through the word. To understand this concept in a simple and comprehensive way, let’s understand these two words separately.

Graphic design is the communication of an idea or concept in a visual manner and theory is a system of ideas meant to explain something. 

So, simply put, design theory is a system of ideas that explains how and why a design works. Designers need to know how everything they design should communicate, influence, direct, and excites an audience, while design theory explains why. 

So, What Exactly Is Design Theory?

Design Principles 

There are five design principles that should be used in every project. Each principle is an essential part of the design, but it is most critical to understand how they work together. 

Alignment 

Alignment refers to the placements of visual elements on the page. This creates a visual connection and unified design. It allows the viewer’s eyes to see order, which makes an easier, and more comfortable viewing experience. 

Repetition 

Repeating elements create association and familiarity. If certain elements are used repetitively, they can be used to show quickly recognize and identify a brand, publication, etc. 

Contrast 

Contrast is used to create impact and emphasis in a design. It can be created by using two opposite elements, such as classic and contemporary typography or warm and cool colors. 

Hierarchy 

Hierarchy is fundamental in creating organization in a design. Hierarchy is achieved by grouping similar things close to each other, and that indicates that they are related to each other in some way.  

Balance 

Balance is the weight distributed on a page by how things are placed. It gives stability and structure to the design. There are two kinds—symmetrical balance and balance by tension. 

Color Theory and Color Technical 

As you know colors instill different feelings as they affect psychology. The color theory explains how and why to use a specific color or color palette in a design. 

It explains why color can be a very powerful tool; how it can entice or persuade, create a specific emotion or convince someone for something. 

Successful designers understand the effective use of color combinations and induce various emotions and feeling through them. 

Design Thinking 

Design Thinking is all about creating a human-centered design. This process includes making designs for a particular group of audiences known as potential users. 

Design Thinking can be spread in five different stages: 

Empathise: 

You need to understand the audience, their likes, dislikes and what they respond to. 

Define: 

Then, you need to define the problem that needs to be solved through their design. 

Iterate: 

After that, you need to brainstorm several ideas of how to solve these problems. 

Prototype: 

Then decide what these ideas will look like by making a prototype version of your product. 

Test: 

The intended audience tests the design to discover what did and didn’t work. 

Graphic Elements 

Able to be identifying graphic elements and using effectively using them in your design is a skill most graphic designers should possess. 

Graphic elements are nothing but a combination of forms, lines, and shapes—some examples include line work, pattern, texture, and type. 

graphic elements can be used to provide variation in a design or create a hierarchy to guide the viewer through a design.
